2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Moderate to low order of toxicity. Small amounts of liquid aspirated into the respiratory system during ingestion or vomiting may cause bronchopneumonia or pulmonary oedema. Ingestion may produce burns to the mouth and oral cavity.

Eye

Contact with eyes may result in severe irritation. Reddening and possible swelling of the conjunctiva may occur.

Skin

Skin contact may result in slight irritation.

Inhaled

Negligible hazard at ambient temperature (-18 to 38 deg C) Irritating to eyes and respiratory tract in high concentrations.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Mutagenic effects are not expected. There are indications of developmental toxic effects from animal reproduction studies. Possible risk of harm to the unborn child. Rats andmice given 2-ethylhexanoic acid in the diet at 0.1, 0.5 or 1.5% for 90 days, did not exhibit any adverse effects. No increase in fetal malformations was noted among pregnant femal F344 rats or rabbits administered 0, 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg/day and 0, 25, 125 and 250 mg/kg/day, respectively during gestation. However, evidence of maternal toxicity was observed only in rats at exposure levels of 250 and 500 mg/kg/day. No feto- toxicity was observed in rabbits. In another developmental/reproductive toxicity study, the sodium salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid was administered to Wistar rats at doses of 100, 300 or 600 mg/kg/day in the drinking water. In the developmental toxicity study slightly impaired fertility in the parents and delayed postnatal development in the pups were observed.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Immediately rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water. Seek medical attention.

Eye

If eye contact occurs, immediately rinse under running water for 15 minutes with eyelids held open. Consult eye specialist.

Skin

If skin contact occurs, immediately wash under running water. Immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly before reuse.

Inhaled

If difficulties occur after inhalation of vapour or aerosol, remove affected person to fresh air and seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of the patient.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 3640 mg/kg (rat) Dermal LD50 = > 2000 mg/kg (rabbit) Primary skin irritation/rabbit/OECD test = irritant, Primary eye irritation/rabbit/OECD test = non-irrtant. Acute inhalation hazard = no mortalities after 8 hours exposure in a highly enriched and/or saturated atmopshere @ 20 deg C (rat, test results depending on toxicity and volatility. Ames test : no mutagenic effect

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No exposure standard has been allocated for this product.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposure to a minimum.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory protection - if vapours or mists are generated or if ventilation is inadequate, wear an approved organic vapour/mist respirator or an air supplied respirator as appropriate. Eye protection - wear chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shields. Skin protection - wear PVC, rubber, neoprene or similar gloves. Wear overalls, apron, boots as necessary to prevent contact. Other information - The usual precautios for handling of chemicals must be observed. Avoid breathing vapour/aerosol.

3.4 Flammability

Combustible. Keep away from all sources of ignition and heat. Earth all containers to reduce the possibility of sparks from static electricity. Combustible when exposed to heat or flame; may react with oxidising agents. Vapours may form flammable mixtures with air.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool, well ventilated place. Protect against alkalies and alkaline substances. Store as C1 combustible liquid in accordance with all regulations. Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Prevent electrostatic charge. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear. Do not handle, store or open near an open flame, sources of heat or sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. DO NOT pressurise, cut, heat or weld containers. Empty product containers may contain product residue. DO NOT reuse empty containers with commercial cleaning or reconditioning.

Hazard HARMFUL

Risk Phrases

R63 Possible risk of harm to the unborn child.

Safety Phrases

S2 Keep out of the reach of children.

S36/37 Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus. A vapour respirator may be necessary for spills in confined areas or for large spills. Sources of ignition should be kept clear. NO SMOKING. DO NOT let product enter drains.

LAND SPILL - contain spilled liquid with sand or earth. Recover by pumping (use an explosive-proof or hand pump) or with a suitable absorbent. If liquid is too viscous for pumping, scrape up woth shovels or pails and place in suitable containers for recycle or disposal. WATER SPILL - warn other shipping. Notify port or relevant authority and keep public away. Remove from surface by skimming or with suitable absorbents. If allowed by local authorities and environmental agencies sinking and/or suitable dispersants may be used in non-confined waters.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations by incineration at an approved waste disposal facility. Small amounts may also be treated in an effluent treatment plant. Flush away spill area residues with copious amounts of water. Empty drums and containers should be thoroughly rinsed with water and then passed on for recycling or reprocessing.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Combustible liquid. Incompatible with alkaline substances or strong oxidising agents. Exothermic reaction with strong alkalis. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Extinguishing Media

Fire fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. In case of fire use water, foam, carbon dioxide or dry chemical type extinguishers. Contain and dispose of fire debris and contaminated extinguishants in accordance with State and Local regulations. Do not allow to reach sewerage of effluent systems.
